Updated May 16, 2011 07:29:00

Australian tennis great Ken Rosewall is reportedly in the stroke unit of a Rome hospital after taking a bad turn on the weekend.

According to a report in Fairfax media, Rosewall was rushed to hospital with emergency room doctors claiming he had suffered "a suspected disturbance of the brain circuit."

Rosewall, 76, was in the Italian capital to attend a ceremony where he was due to receive a golden racquet given annually to former tennis greats.

His wife Wilma said doctors told her that he had not suffered any heart or brain damage, but Rosewall will be kept under observation until he is well enough to fly back to Australia.

Rosewall won 132 singles titles, including four Australian Opens, two French Opens and two US Opens during a decorated career.
