Australia took a 1-0 lead over Ukraine in its Fed Cup World Group play-off on Saturday.
Jarmila Groth gave Australia a flying start when she crushed Ukraine's Olga Savchuk 6-1, 6-1 in Melbourne.
The world number 30 took just 48 minutes to beat Savchuk and was never challenged from the moment she broke serve in the opening game.
The second rubber pits Australian number two Anastasia Rodionova against Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko.
The winner of the tie will remain in the elite eight-nation World Group.
The opening two singles matches are played on Saturday with both the reverse singles and the doubles scheduled for Sunday.
