Li Na into second round in Sydney

Defending champion Li Na has made a sizzling start to the Sydney International, romping into the second round in barely an hour.

The fourth-seeded French Open champion outclassed Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-0, 6-3 after winning the first nine games of the match.

Li will face a qualifier in the second round, either South African Chanelle Scheepers or Hungarian Melinda Czink.

Australia's fifth seed Samantha Stosur was due to play her opening match later on Monday against Italian Francesca Schiavone.

The match of the day is a sequel to their 2010 French Open final which Schiavone won.

In Monday's other matches, Li's Chinese compatriot Peng Shuai fell at the first hurdle, coming up against a determined Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, who won 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Germany's Andrea Petkovic beat Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the second round, while Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru beat Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-1, 6-1.

In the men's results, American Ryan Sweeting beat Gilles Muller 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, while Poland's Lukasz Kubot beat Croatia's Ivan Dodig 7-6, 7-5.
