Tennis legend targeted for anti gay marriage view

Updated January 12, 2012 10:47:19

Gay rights groups will target Western Australian tennis legend Margaret Court during a peaceful protest planned for next week's Australian Open.

The Facebook group, Rainbow Flags Over Margaret Court Arena, started up in response to Mrs Court's anti gay marriage stance, urging people to display gay pride colours at the tournament.

Doug Pollard, from Melbourne's gay radio station, Joy FM was behind an idea to ask Tennis Australia to fly a rainbow flag over Margaret Court Arena during the event.

He says it would be a gesture of support for the gay community.

"There's never been any suggestion of making a demonstration or a rally or a big noise," he said.

"We don't want to take away from Margaret Court's tennis achievements, we just want to highlight her homophobic views."
